Germany’s Economic Outlook Drops Amid Iran war

(MENAFN) Germany's economic outlook deteriorated sharply in April, as the ongoing Iran war stoked deepening fears over energy security and drove investors away, the latest ZEW institute survey revealed Tuesday.

The closely watched economic expectations index for Germany plummeted 16.7 points from the previous month, settling at minus 17.2 points — a stark signal that business confidence is eroding at an accelerating pace. The assessment of Germany's current economic situation fell even harder, sliding 10.8 points below its March reading to minus 73.7 points.

ZEW president Achim Wambach cautioned that the fallout from the Iran war extended well beyond surging energy prices, warning of structural damage to the broader German economy. Wambach noted that businesses were increasingly anxious about prolonged disruptions to energy supply chains — anxieties that are actively suppressing investment appetite and blunting the impact of government stimulus measures.

The sectoral breakdown painted an uneven but largely grim picture. Expectations for the automotive industry held relatively steady at minus 44.2 points, offering a rare pocket of stability. The chemical and pharmaceutical industries, however, shed 11 points compared to March, while steel and metal production took a heavier blow, deteriorating by 21 points. The construction sector crossed into negative territory for the month, registering minus 3.8 points.

The damage was not confined to Germany alone. The eurozone's expectations index dropped 11.9 points in April to minus 20.4 points, while the bloc's current economic situation assessment fell 13.1 points from March to reach minus 43 points — underscoring how the Iran conflict is casting a widening shadow across the European economy.
