South Korea Posts Increase in December 2025 Real Wages

(MENAFN) South Korea's inflation-adjusted wages climbed for a third consecutive month in December 2025, driven by sustained growth in nominal pay, official data revealed Thursday.

According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor, the per-capita nominal monthly average wage across firms with at least one full-time employee rose 3.1 percent year-on-year to 4,750,000 won — approximately 3,340 U.S. dollars — extending an unbroken upward streak that began in August 2024.

Real wages, however, posted a more modest gain of 0.7 percent on an annual basis in December, easing sharply from the 1.6 percent expansion recorded the prior month.

Headline inflation has remained anchored near the Bank of Korea's medium-term target of 2.0 percent in recent months, registering 1.7 percent in August, 2.4 percent in October, and 2.3 percent in December.

Working hours also surged during the period. Average monthly hours per employee jumped 3.4 percent year-on-year to 163.2 hours in December, the ministry said.

Among industries, manufacturing workers logged the highest monthly hours at 178.8, with the water supply, sewage, waste management, and materials recovery sector close behind at 178.0 hours. Construction workers recorded the fewest hours, clocking just 136.2 — the shortest of any sector tracked in the report.
