OpenAI seeks new head of preparedness to lead AI safety efforts
A job posting published on Monday indicated that the successful candidate would earn $555,000 annually and oversee the company’s safety systems team, which is tasked with ensuring AI models are developed and deployed responsibly.
CEO Sam Altman noted on social media that the position would be highly demanding, warning that the person hired would “jump into the deep end almost immediately.”
“This is a critical role at an important time; models are improving quickly and are now capable of many great things, but they are also starting to present some real challenges,” Altman said.
The recruitment comes amid heightened scrutiny of AI’s impact on mental health, following multiple allegations linking OpenAI’s chatbot, ChatGPT, to interactions preceding several suicides.
Altman also highlighted that the rapid progress of AI models has introduced new risks, acknowledging growing safety concerns. He added that the potential effects on mental health became apparent in 2025 and cautioned that AI systems are now becoming sophisticated enough in computer security to uncover critical vulnerabilities.
