China Emphasizes Strong Xi, Trump Communication
(MENAFN) Beijing affirmed on Tuesday that Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump are engaged in "close exchanges and communication."
This reassurance came through Foreign Ministry representative Guo Jiakun during a standard press briefing in the Chinese capital.
Guo underscored the vital role of direct communication between the two leaders, stating that "the head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable strategic guiding role in China-US relations."
His remarks followed President Trump’s declaration on Monday that he intends to travel to China "at some point, probably during this year or shortly thereafter."
Guo expressed optimism that the United States would collaborate constructively with China to encourage the consistent, stable, and enduring advancement of bilateral ties.
Reiterating his message, Guo was quoted by a Chinese government-backed outlet, as saying, "The heads of state of China and the US maintain close exchanges and communication.”
Additionally, Guo emphasized China’s willingness to strengthen ties with the US based on the principles of "mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and willing cooperation."
At the same time, he stressed China's determination to defend "its own sovereignty, security, and development interests."
These comments were a response to increasing suggestions that Washington, DC may hold greater influence over China in trade matters.
On Monday, Trump warned he might introduce a 200% tariff “or something” on China should it fail to provide the US with rare earth magnets. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence that “we’re not going to have a problem.”
