New Zealand Unveils New Visa Category to Boost Economy

(MENAFN) The New Zealand government unveiled a fresh visa category on Wednesday aimed at drawing investment and skilled entrepreneurs to stimulate economic growth.

Immigration Minister Erica Stanford introduced the Business Investor Visa (BIV) in an official statement, emphasizing its role in attracting business migrants.

"The Business Investor Visa (BIV) will provide a pathway to residence for business migrants who are ready to invest in, operate and grow established businesses here," Erica Stanford stated.

She further underscored the visa’s economic impact: "This new visa will bring overseas investment to maintain and create jobs, grow incomes, and breathe new life into existing businesses across the country."

Set to open for applications in November 2025, the BIV offers two investment tiers — NZD 1 million and NZD 2 million — both providing routes to residency. The visa targets experienced investors with both the capital and operational expertise necessary to successfully manage businesses in New Zealand.

The government anticipates that the BIV will deliver substantial economic gains, reinforcing its commitment to revitalizing the country’s business landscape.

The introduction of the BIV complements broader reforms in New Zealand’s business visa framework, including updates to the Active Investor Plus visa, aimed at enhancing investment and talent attraction.

Latest data from Stats NZ highlights the urgency behind the policy shift: New Zealand’s unemployment rate climbed to 5.2% in the June quarter, while annual GDP growth fell 1.1% in the March quarter. Additionally, net migration gains dropped sharply from 70,400 in June 2024 to 13,700 in June 2025, largely due to a decline in arrivals of non-New Zealand citizens, according to Stats NZ figures released earlier this month.
