Australia Expels Iranian Envoy
(MENAFN) Australia has expelled Iran’s ambassador and halted activities at its embassy in Tehran, alleging that the Iranian regime orchestrated a series of antisemitic incidents within Australian borders.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the move on Tuesday, revealing that the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) had collected “credible intelligence” connecting Iran’s government to attacks targeting the Lewis Continental Kitchen in Sydney and the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne during the previous year.
“Since the terrible events of October 7, 2023, we have witnessed a number of appalling anti-Semitic attacks against Australia's Jewish community. I've made it clear that these sorts of incidents have no place in Australia and that I wanted ASIO and the AFP (Australian Federal Police) to investigate as a priority," Albanese said in a televised statement.
He emphasized that ASIO had now compiled enough substantial evidence to reach the “deeply disturbing conclusion” that the Iranian state was responsible for at least two of these assaults. He further claimed that Iran had attempted to obscure its involvement in the incidents.
In his message, the Prime Minister also condemned Tehran’s actions, accusing the Iranian authorities of seeking to erode national unity.
“It is totally unacceptable,” he stated.
As a result, Australia is implementing firm and immediate measures.
“A short time ago, we informed the Iranian Ambassador to Australia that he would be expelled. We have suspended operations at our embassy in Tehran, and all our diplomats are now safe in a third country,” Albanese declared.
Additionally, he confirmed that Australia intends to classify Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist entity.
