Musk’s X, xAI File Lawsuit Against Apple, OpenAI

(MENAFN) Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk’s two companies—his social media platform X and the artificial intelligence venture xAI—have initiated legal action against Apple and OpenAI.

The lawsuit, submitted on Monday, accuses the tech giants of engaging in an "anticompetitive scheme" intended to "thwart" rivals in the artificial intelligence sector.

According to the complaint filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of Texas, the two firms argue that Apple and OpenAI "colluded" to protect their dominant positions in both the smartphone industry and the generative AI market.

The filing suggests this alleged collaboration is strategically designed to limit opportunities for emerging competitors.

The lawsuit further alleges that Apple shows preferential treatment to OpenAI by integrating its ChatGPT assistant into Apple devices, while deliberately reducing the visibility and performance of alternative AI tools—such as xAI’s Grok chatbot—and comprehensive "super apps" in its App Store listings.

“Unless the court enjoins Apple and OpenAI’s unlawful conduct, defendants will continue to thwart competition, and their competitors, like plaintiffs, will continue to suffer the anticompetitive consequences,” the complaint states.

Earlier this month, Musk posted on his platform, X, asserting his intention to sue Apple for what he described as "an unequivocal antitrust violation."

He accused the company of acting in a way that makes it “impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store."

Last year, Apple and OpenAI began collaborating to embed ChatGPT capabilities across various Apple devices, including Mac computers, iPhones, iPads, and desktops.

Following the public reveal of this partnership, several respondents to Musk’s post on X—via its Community Notes feature—highlighted that rival chatbot tools like DeepSeek and Perplexity briefly reached the No. 1 position on the App Store, despite the alleged favoritism.
