Aegean Sea Incident Leaves Four Migrants Dead, Others Missing

(MENAFN) A deadly incident in the Aegean Sea has left four undocumented migrants dead and sparked an urgent search for others still missing, according to a statement Monday by Türkiye’s Coast Guard Command.

At 2:04 a.m. local time (2304 GMT Sunday), rescue authorities were alerted to migrants in distress after falling overboard from a rubber boat near the Karaburun district in the western province of Izmir.

"Rescue units dispatched to the area saved two migrants alive and recovered the bodies of four others," the Coast Guard confirmed via its official website.

The two rescued individuals told authorities that additional migrants remained unaccounted for, triggering ongoing search-and-rescue efforts in the surrounding waters.

Officials have yet to release the total number of people aboard the vessel or disclose their intended destination.

The Aegean Sea continues to be a key crossing point for migrants attempting to reach Europe via Türkiye, which currently hosts approximately 4 million refugees—primarily Syrians—according to the Presidential Directorate of Communications.
