Okinawa Authorities Arrest Four U.S. Servicemen
The most recent arrest involved a 23-year-old U.S. Marine corporal, stopped on a city street in Okinawa on suspicion of driving under the influence. Officers on patrol observed the vehicle swerving and pulled it over. A breathalyzer test showed the corporal’s blood alcohol concentration surpassed the legal threshold, a national broadcaster reported.
On May 25, another 20-year-old U.S. Marine was taken into custody on suspicion of a hit-and-run accident, with a breath test also revealing alcohol levels above the legal limit.
Earlier that same day, a 26-year-old U.S. Navy sailor was arrested in Okinawa City for allegedly trespassing on a private balcony.
Additionally, on the evening of May 23, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine was arrested in Chatan Town on charges of public indecency after reportedly exposing himself.
Incidents involving U.S. military members in Okinawa have long been a contentious issue. Data from Okinawa Prefecture indicate that between 1972 and 2023, roughly 6,200 criminal cases involving U.S. military personnel and their families were reported, encompassing serious offenses such as murder, rape, and robbery.
