Ship with Eight Onboard Vanishes in Indonesia's Bengkulu

(MENAFN) A small vessel carrying eight individuals has vanished in the waters off Indonesia's western Bengkulu province, prompting an urgent search and rescue mission, a senior official confirmed Monday.

The KM Althaf set sail from Bengkulu City’s seaport, the provincial capital, on Saturday around 3:00 p.m. Jakarta time, en route to Enggano Island located in North Bengkulu Regency, according to Muslikun Sodik, chief of the Bengkulu Province Search and Rescue Office.

"The ship should arrive in Enggano Island at about 7:00 a.m. Sunday. However, until now, the ship has not arrived at its destination. The ship and all the people on board cannot be contacted. The occupants of the ship were the captain, two crew, and five passengers," he told a news agency.

In response, the provincial search and rescue office swiftly mobilized personnel alongside naval forces and volunteers to conduct extensive search operations.

Sodik further revealed that the region is currently experiencing severe weather, with powerful winds and towering waves complicating rescue efforts.
