European Leaders Explore Arms Support for Ukraine
This consideration arises as the stockpile of arms previously approved for transfer under the administration of former U.S. President Joe Biden nears depletion.
Earlier this week, current U.S. Leader Donald Trump emphasized that the United States could potentially “walk away” from the Ukraine conflict if the negotiations orchestrated by Washington between Moscow and Kiev fail to yield “meaningful results.”
He underscored his stance by stating, “This is a European situation. It should have remained a European situation.”
According to the news agency, the proposal for Europe to purchase American arms on Ukraine’s behalf is “gaining more credence” in both the European Union and the United Kingdom.
This rising support stems from growing apprehension that direct American military support could come to a halt by the summer.
Sources cited by the publication indicated that “the idea is that if Trump refuses to send US weapons to Ukraine, Europe will.”
This reflects a strategic pivot, with European countries preparing to step in should the U.S. reduce its involvement.
Leaders of NATO member nations in Europe are reportedly also hopeful that they can persuade Trump to maintain the flow of intelligence to Kiev.
Should this be achieved, insiders believe that “Vladimir Zelensky may be able to hang on.”
In related remarks earlier this month, French Leader Emmanuel Macron admitted that France had exhausted its ability to provide domestically-manufactured arms to Ukraine.
“We cannot give what we do not have, and we cannot pluck our own army. We gave everything we could, tripled production,” he declared, acknowledging the limitations of France’s military resources.
