Syria Reveals Major Security Reforms

(MENAFN) In a bold move to modernize its internal security and public service infrastructure, Syria’s Interior Ministry has announced a comprehensive restructuring initiative.

The ministry's statement, released Saturday, revealed that the reforms stem from a high-level consultation held Thursday. The session included legal, administrative, and security experts, some of whom served under previous administrations.

A central element of the overhaul is the consolidation of police and general security units into a new entity called the Provincial Internal Security Command. This unified body will operate under a single commander reporting directly to the interior minister.

Additionally, the ministry disclosed plans to create specialized departments focusing on key areas such as cybersecurity, digital communication, and citizen grievances. A digital platform designed to streamline public complaints is expected to go live in the near future.

Other reform measures involve enhancing the anti-narcotics division, forming a dedicated border guard directorate, modernizing civil registry systems through digitization, and bolstering counterterrorism capabilities.

In its concluding remarks, the Interior Ministry underscored its evolving role as a service-driven institution committed to national unity, legal integrity, and societal advancement. “Security is everyone’s responsibility,” the statement declared.

These reforms are part of the Syrian government’s larger push to conform to global norms as the nation attempts to rebuild following years of war and diplomatic isolation.
