Germany Hints at Possible Conscription in 2026

(MENAFN) Germany could potentially reinstate mandatory military service as soon as next year if voluntary enlistment falls short of fulfilling the country’s NATO commitments, according to Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

The nation ended conscription in 2011 but has recently been reconsidering this policy due to perceived “threats” from Russia.

However, Moscow has rejected claims of any plans to attack NATO members as “nonsense,” accusing Western nations of attempting to frighten European citizens and rationalize increased defense spending.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz and his coalition partners have agreed on adopting the ‘Swedish model,’ which blends selective compulsory service with voluntary enlistment.

Currently, efforts are underway to enact new legislation by the end of this year, Pistorius revealed in an interview on Saturday.

Pistorius emphasized, “Our model is initially based on voluntary participation.”

He added, “If the time comes when we have more capacity available than voluntary registrations, then we may decide to make it mandatory. That is the roadmap.”

Earlier this month, Chancellor Merz expressed his ambition to transform the Bundeswehr into the “strongest army” in Europe, shortly after the world commemorated the 80th anniversary of Nazi Germany’s defeat in World War II.
