Intense Flooding Damages New South Wales

(MENAFN) Australian officials reported on Saturday that an estimated 10,000 homes sustained damage due to unprecedented flooding across New South Wales (NSW), affecting approximately 50,000 residents.

The New South Wales State Emergency Service (SES) announced it had begun evaluating the extent of the destruction following an improvement in weather conditions.

"Flood waters in some locations are starting to subside, however are also still rising in other areas as flows move downstream," the SES noted in a statement, highlighting that while some regions were seeing relief, others continued to face worsening conditions.

Emergency alerts remain active in numerous areas, including Taree, Kempsey, and Port Macquarie, where communities are still at risk.

NSW SES Chief Superintendent Paul McQueen emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “I reiterate this is still a dangerous situation where significant impacts to infrastructure and properties are likely to have occurred. Unfortunately, it is not possible to let people return to their homes until water further subsides and we’re sure they can access their homes and communities safely.”
