First Wheat Shipment Arrives in Syria Since Assad’s Fall
Based on a news agency, “The first wheat shipment has arrived at Latakia Port following Syria’s liberation and the fall of the former regime.”
However, the report did not reveal either the source of the cargo or the total amount of wheat it contained.
Earlier in March, the Syrian authorities announced tenders aiming to obtain 200,000 tons of wheat. This move represented the largest wheat acquisition plan since Assad's departure, as reported by regional news outlets.
After the regime's downfall in December, Russia halted its wheat deliveries to Syria, ending a longstanding supply relationship that had been maintained during Assad’s governance.
As a countermeasure, Ukrainian Leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared that Ukraine had shipped 500 tons of flour to Syria through the “Grain from Ukraine” relief program, carried out in partnership with the World Food Program.
At the same time, the recently formed Syrian leadership has been actively attempting to meet the country’s grain demands and reestablish commercial connections, particularly with neighboring Turkey.
