Israeli offensive leaves 90 percent of Rafah in ruins

(MENAFN) Local authorities in Gaza reported on Sunday that approximately 90% of residential neighborhoods in the southern city of Rafah have been destroyed by the Israeli army since October 2023.

Gaza's government media office reported that the Israeli military has destroyed a 12,000-square-meter section in Rafah, describing the city as a stark illustration of “one of the most horrific examples of genocide and ethnic cleansing in modern times.”

The media office further stated that the destruction extends to essential infrastructure, with 85% of the city’s sewage network reportedly damaged, raising concerns about potential disease outbreaks.

The healthcare system in Rafah has also been severely impacted, with the media office reporting that "all 12 medical centers in Rafah are now out of service." This includes Abu Youssef al-Najjar Hospital, which the office claimed "Israeli forces detonated using an explosive robot in the course of its deadly offensive on Gaza."

Educational and religious establishments have endured considerable destruction. According to the media office, Israeli airstrikes have obliterated eight schools and educational facilities, while the remaining structures in Rafah have sustained extensive damage. Furthermore, the report indicated that over 100 mosques in Rafah have either been destroyed or significantly harmed.

Rafah, covering an area of approximately 60 square kilometers and inhabited by around 300,000 residents—about 16% of Gaza's total land—is currently experiencing a severe lack of clean water. According to the media office, 22 out of Rafah's 24 water wells have been damaged, resulting in tens of thousands of individuals lacking access to safe drinking water.
