Alliance Fleuve Congo declares withdrawal from Walikale
(MENAFN) On Saturday, the Alliance Fleuve Congo, an armed coalition that includes M23 rebels, declared its withdrawal from the town of Walikale and its nearby areas in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday. This move came after the group had recently taken control of the mineral-rich region.
According to a remark released by the group's representative, Lawrence Kanyuka, on X, the withdrawal aligns with a one-sided ceasefire announced on February 22nd. The objective is to create favorable conditions for discussion aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in Congo.
“To support peace initiatives aimed at fostering conditions conducive to political dialogue addressing the root causes of the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, the Alliance Fleuve Congo has decided to reposition its forces from the town of Walikale and its surrounding areas,” the remark read.
Furthermore, the coalition urged “residents of Walikale and their community leaders to take necessary measures to ensure security and protection of the civilian population and their property during this transition period.”
