Vice President JD Vance Urges Greenland to Cut Ties with Denmark
In a short visit to the remote US Pituffik Space Base in northern Greenland on Friday, Vance argued that the US is “the only nation on Earth that will respect (Greenlanders') sovereignty and respect their security,” as reported by a news agency.
"You have under-invested in the people of Greenland and you have under-invested in the security of this incredible, beautiful landmass," he stated, directing his criticism at Denmark without presenting evidence for his allegations.
Vance curtailed his planned visit after reports suggested he would encounter demonstrators if he traveled to more public regions.
Accompanied by US National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, Vance stated that while the US had no instant desire to boost its military forces on the island, it would redirect more resources to Greenland, such as naval ships and military icebreakers.
Despite the freezing temperatures of minus 19 degrees Celsius (minus 2.2 degrees Fahrenheit), Vance’s visit was just for several hours, and his comments sparked significant backlash.
